THE STORY BEHIND MAO'S FACTORY

A Lifetime of Creating. A Passion for Building What Comes Next. My name is Mauricio “Mao” Amortegui. I’m an architect, builder, entrepreneur, fly fisherman, and creator. My journey began in Colombia and brought me to the United States, where life challenged me to start over—not once, but several times. I went from architecture to cleaning swimming pools. From starting businesses to losing almost everything during the financial crisis. From rebuilding alongside my son Andrés to creating a successful construction company based on hard work, integrity, and doing things the right way. But through every chapter of my life, one thing has never changed: I have always loved to create. That passion eventually found its way into one of the places where I feel most at home—the water. As a lifelong fly fisherman, I began designing and tying my own flies, experimenting with materials, colors, movement, and patterns, and testing every idea where it truly matters:

One of those creations became the Mao’s Fly Red Ghost—a fly born at my tying table, refined through experimentation, and proven through real catches across multiple species. And that fly became the beginning of something bigger.
