A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE SALTWATER FLY
The MAO’S FLY GREEN QUILL features a distinctive combination of green, gray, and red. Created by Mauricio Amortegui in August 2026, it was designed specifically for fishing the waters of Biscayne Bay.
The concept behind this pattern was to imitate a small reef baitfish, which inspired its color combination and striking red head. It was also designed to produce an enticing swimming action in the water. To achieve this, I used soft, lightweight materials: three Ewing Green Deceiver Hackle feathers—two used to form the body and tail and one for the collar—with a subtle touch of red underneath and a striking red head to complete the pattern.
To give the fly a balanced swimming action, I incorporated five wraps of lead wire on a size #6 hook, positioned approximately ¼ inch behind the hook eye. This added weight allows the fly to swim at mid-depth during the retrieve and sink deeper when paused, helping us present the fly exactly where we want it in the water column.

The pattern is built primarily with Ewing Green Deceiver Hackle for the body, tail, and collar. The head is hand-formed with Red Ultra Thread 140 Denier and finished with UV epoxy resin.
The surprise came during testing. The fly not only attracted schools of snapper—with several fish striking at the same time—but also triggered strikes from Blue Jacks, demonstrating the effectiveness of this pattern.
We have tied this pattern on different hook sizes—preferably #6—and experimented with Ewing Deceiver Hackle in other colors, including blue, black, beige, brown, and purple, producing some very attractive variations of the original fly.
We will continue testing these colors to discover what other species they can attract and will report our results as we go. We believe the MAO’S FLY GREEN QUILL has excellent potential as a versatile pattern for a variety of saltwater species.
