The Story Behind the White Hair Dancer
The MAO’S WHITE HAIR DANCER was designed by Mauricio Amortegui with an initial goal in mind: to develop a slender-profile fly for targeting Snook.
The idea was to create a slim silhouette suggesting a small baitfish or sardine fry, with a slow, vulnerable action capable of triggering the predatory instinct of gamefish. One of the most unusual elements of the pattern came directly from experimentation at the tying bench. Mauricio decided to incorporate some of his own gray hair as a natural tying material, taking advantage of its fine, long, lightweight fibers.
Combined with Peacock Herl and White Strung Neck Hackle, these fibers helped create a distinctive fly—and also inspired its name: MAO’S WHITE HAIR DANCER

The original description documents the use of white hair, Peacock Herl, and white neck hackle as the primary materials of the pattern.
Design & Movement
The profile of the White Hair Dancer is built primarily with natural white hair, Peacock Herl, and White Strung Neck Hackle. The goal is to maintain a relatively slender silhouette with fibers that can move freely during the retrieve. Beneath the white hair are five wraps of .025 lead wire secured to a Gamakatsu B10S Stinger Size #2 hook. This added weight helps the head dip slightly during the retrieve. The combination of this downward movement and the natural motion of the fibers is intended to suggest a vulnerable or struggling baitfish, creating an enticing presentation for predatory fish.
A Simple, Eyeless Head
Unlike some of the other patterns in the collection, the White Hair Dancer does not use eyes. The head is formed with Black Ultra Thread 140 Denier and finished with two coats of UV epoxy resin. The black finish creates a strong contrast against the white fibers while maintaining the simple, distinctive profile of the pattern.

Early Tests & Results
The White Hair Dancer has been tested in the canals of Broward County, Florida. Although it was originally conceived with Snook in mind, other species responded to the pattern during these early tests, including Oscar and Mayan Cichlid. The photographs documenting the fly also show a Gar caught on the pattern, adding another species to its early results. The images on pages 3 and 4 document different stages of the tying process, the finished fly, and several of the catches made during testing.
Still Chasing the Snook
The original goal behind the White Hair Dancer remains unfinished. We will continue testing the pattern in the freshwater of the Florida Everglades and expand our trials into Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys, exploring its potential in saltwater and, especially, pursuing our first Snook on the White Hair dancer. When that happens, the catch will become another chapter in the documented story of this fly.
