The First Tests

Before reaching the species, it was originally designed for, early tests in Broward canals produced an interesting response. Peacock Bass and Largemouth Bass reacted to the pattern, with Peacock Bass producing fast and aggressive strikes. These first fishing sessions showed that the larger profile, movement, and reflective elements of the Ghost Grand Minnow could trigger a strong response from freshwater predators.

Design, Weight & Movement

One of the defining characteristics of the Ghost Grand Minnow is the combination of its elongated profile and weight concentrated toward the head. Seven wraps of .025 lead wire are secured to the hook to provide the weight needed to create a sinking motion during pauses in the retrieve. By alternating this drop with a faster, more linear swimming action, the pattern is designed to suggest a baitfish that has momentarily lost its normal swimming behavior. Strips of Flashabou Tinsel are incorporated along both sides of the body, producing reflective flashes during the retrieve and increasing the visibility of the pattern.

Construction & Profile

The Ghost Grand Minnow uses White Finn Raccoon Zonker to create a long, soft profile with natural movement in the water. The body incorporates a laminated cardstock structure covering seven wraps of .025 lead wire secured to a Gamakatsu B10S Stinger Size #2 hook. The ¼-inch molded 3D eyes help complete the baitfish profile, while UV-cured epoxy resin provides the final finish. The combination of White Finn Raccoon Zonker and Flashabou Tinsel creates movement, profile, and reflective flashes designed to increase the fly’s visibility in the water. Tested in Florida Waters

Early tests in Broward canals produced strikes and catches from Peacock Bass and Largemouth Bass. These freshwater results represent the first stage of testing for the Ghost Grand Minnow. The photographs on page 4 document the Peacock Bass results obtained with the pattern. Our next step is to continue testing the fly in the Florida Everglades and expand those trials into Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys, where we can explore its potential with saltwater species.

Still Chasing the Original Targets

Snook and Jack Crevalle remain two of our primary goals for the Ghost Grand Minnow. We will continue fishing, observing, and refining the pattern while documenting the species that respond to it. Design. Tie. Fish. Observe. Keep improving.

Exploring Other Variations

The Ghost Grand Minnow can be tied in different hook sizes—with a preference for #2—and also opens the possibility of experimenting with Finn Raccoon Zonker in other colors, including beige, brown, orange, olive green, and chartreuse. As these variations are tested, we will continue documenting and sharing the results.
