The Story Behind the Ghost White
The MAO’S GHOST WHITE was designed by Mauricio Amortegui in March 2026 with a very specific goal in mind: to create a fly for targeting Snook.
The idea behind the pattern was to suggest the silhouette of a small baitfish or fry, similar to a sardine, with a slow swimming action combined with erratic movement intended to trigger the predatory instinct of gamefish.
Although Snook remains one of our primary targets for this fly, the first tests in the Florida Everglades brought an interesting surprise: other species also responded to the pattern.
Design & Movement
One of the defining characteristics of the Ghost White is its profile. The white Finn Raccoon used for the wing and tail creates a soft, elongated silhouette. In the water, the fibers produce a natural, flowing action that helps suggest the movement of a small baitfish. The dark body with silver highlights creates contrast against the white Finn Raccoon, while the head is shaped to suggest the front profile of a small fish.
Materials & Construction
The Ghost White is tied primarily with White Finn Raccoon Zonker for the wing and tail. The body is constructed from a plastic cylinder wrapped with aluminum material, secured with black thread and finished with UV-cured epoxy resin. Molded 3D eyes complete the baitfish profile. Together, these materials create the distinctive appearance of the Ghost White: a predominantly white silhouette surrounding a dark body with reflective silver highlights.
The First Tests
The Ghost White was originally conceived for Snook, but our early tests in the Florida Everglades showed that the pattern could attract other species as well. During these first fishing sessions, we saw responses from Largemouth Bass, Gar, and Mayan Cichlid. These early results encouraged us to continue exploring the potential of the pattern in both freshwater and saltwater.
The Florida Everglades will remain one of our primary testing grounds, while Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys will give us the opportunity to continue evaluating the Ghost White with saltwater species.

Still Looking for That Snook.
The original goal behind this fly remains unfinished. We want to produce a Snook strike—and ultimately land a Snook—with the MAO’S GHOST WHITE. Until then, we will continue fishing the pattern, observing its action and documenting the species that respond to it. That experimentation is an important part of how we develop our flies: Design. Tie. Fish. Observe. Keep improving.
Exploring Other Color Combinations
The Ghost White can be tied in different hook sizes—with a preference for #2—and also opens the door to experimenting with Finn Raccoon Zonker in other colors, including beige, brown, orange, olive green, and chartreuse. As we test these variations, we will continue documenting and sharing the results.
